Heterodox Approaches to The Commons

Heterodox Approaches to a Post-Pandemic World was conceptualized in 2020 to commemorate the tenth death anniversary of Professor Alice Amsden a leading Heterodox Economist who was also my doctoral advisor at MIT.

Guy Standing is an economist, with a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He is a Professorial Research Associate at SOAS University of London and was a professor at SOAS and Bath and Monash universities. He was Director of the ILO’s Socio-Economic Security Programme, and Director of Research for President Mandela’s Labour Market Commission. He has been a consultant for many international bodies. He is co-founder and co-president of BIEN, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and the UK Academy of Social Sciences. He has conducted basic income pilots in several countries and advises the governments of Wales and Catalonia on ongoing pilots.

His latest book is The Blue Commons (2022), which the Financial Times made a Book of the Year. Others include Plunder of the Commons (2019); Basic Income: And How We Can Make It Happen (2017); Basic Income: A Transformative Policy for India (2015); The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class (fourth edition 2021).

In this podcast, Guy reflects on what it means to be a Heterodox Economist and his career working on labor, social class, and the emergence of the precariat, rentier capitalism, and more recently the plunder of the commons and the blue sea. He advocates for greater awareness of the blue economy and the economic factors causing an existential threat, through pollution, ecological collapse, acidification, and the rapidly accelerating depletion of many thousands of aquatic species.
